Brooke Owens Fellowship Program for Women Engineers – Host Internship Sites

At the core of each Brookie’s experience is a fulfilling, demanding summer job in aerospace. Here are the deets on where our 2020 Brookies will work!

View this email in your browser

Okay, are you sitting down? Please, at least tell us you’re not driving and checking email…

GET READY TO MEET OUR NEW HOSTS!

Application season for our Class of 2020 is off to a spectacular start! We opened up our call for applications a month earlier than ever before, in order to help streamline the process for students who might be on non-traditional academic schedules. And right on cue, we started receiving our first applications a month earlier, too. But if you haven’t even started your application yet, don’t worry — it’s definitely not too late. And today, we’re ready to make an announcement that will impact all of your applications (yes, even those of you who already applied! Don’t worry, you’ll hear from us soon about how that works.)!

At the core of every Brookie’s experience is a summer internship. Not just any internship: a demanding, fulfilling, hand-picked internship at one of the leading aerospace companies, laboratories, or non-profit institutions in the nation. These are organizations who are really putting in the work to help improve gender equality in aerospace, just like all of us.

Every year, we make a few tweaks to the placements offered to our Brookies in order to grow our Brooke Owens Fellowship family and to keep up with the latest and greatest trends in academia and industry. We always want to maintain a fresh and fulfilling mix of host types so that we can place our Brookies in paying jobs at publicly-traded aerospace powerhouses, brand new startups, trade associations, and not-for-profit R&D labs alike. We love to see our Brookies contributing to everything from components to constellations, and creating everything from prototype hardware to federal policy recommendations and more.

Today, we’re thrilled to announce our final list of host institutions for the Class of 2020. You’ll recognize many familiar names, but we’ve got a few surprises for you, too!

As part of this insanely inspiring class of institutions, we’re thrilled to welcome six awesome new hosts into our program! We think that they really embody the huge range of opportunities available in the aerospace community. The variety of disciplines that Brookies can work and thrive in is also enormous — at these six new host companies alone, we have the possibility of placing Brookies in engineering, operations, science, policy, computer science, business development, entrepreneurship, and industry analysis jobs.

We couldn’t be more thrilled with the incredible caliber of our 32 host institutions and with the commitment they’ve shown to providing substantive work, meaningful development opportunities, and an incredible summer to our deserving fellows. We hope you’ll join us in saying thanks to all of our host institions for being such great supporters of gender equality — and that you’ll make our six new hosts feel especially welcome!

ALUMNAE UPDATE

We couldn’t be more excited about our hosts for 2020. But you know us: we can’t go for too long without bragging about the inspiring accomplishments of our incredible alumnae. Honestly, nothing makes us happier than watching these incredible young women and gender-minorities succeed; they’ve always had the talent, and we’re honored to have played a small part in helping that talent get recognized.

To give you a sense of it, here’s just a sampling of the things our alumnae have done just in the past four months or so.

  • Ayla graduated summa cum laude — with two bachelors in science degrees and two minors, no less — and has started a full-time job with her host company, Maxar!
  • Angelica is one of two chairs for the upcoming SpaceVision conference (see you there?)!
  • Makiah graduated from the International Space University, and is only weeks away from going on active duty as an officer in the US Air Force.
  • Chelsey was promoted to Acting News Chief of NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility — making her the youngest person to have served in that role!
  • Kayleigh, Millie, and Maddie joined the growing pool of Brookies who work at Blue Origin, one of our host companies!
  • Shannon won the Astronaut Scholarship and the first ever Out Astronaut contest!
  • Jaclyn did such an awesome job at her host company, Bryce, that they hired her full time!
  • Mykaela spoke on a panel at the U.S.-Japan Conference on Cultural and Educational Interchange!
  • Leah won the Humanitarian Award from her university’s Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering!
  • Sarah started a full time job with one of our host companies, Sierra Nevada Corp.!
  • Emily founded the Space Law Society at Vanderbilt Law School!
  • Khristian started an internship at one of our host companies, Airbus!
  • Kristen started a full time position at Raytheon — and got accepted into the Johns Hopkins Space Systems Engineering Master’s Program, too!
  • Payton accepted a full time job with one of our host companies, TSC!
  • Justine was selected as the project manager for the SEDS/Planet Dove Art Launch Initiative!
  • Katie graduated magna cum laude and started a full time job with her host company, Astranis!
  • Sue won a scholarship and has started working on her Masters degree at the International Space University!
  • Bridget accepted a full-time job at World View!
  • Meera graduated magna cum laude, helped lead the team that won the 2019 Spaceport America Cup, and started a full-time job at one of our legacy host companies, Generation Orbit!
  • Caroline won both the Future Space Leaders Grant and the Outreach Award for NASA Goddard’s Hydrosphere, Biosphere, and Geophysics (HBG) Annual Peer Awards!
  • Morgan spoke at the Space Settlement Enterprise Conference!
  • Christine started a full-time job at Aurora Flight Sciences!
  • Karen graduated magna cum laude and started a full-time job as one of the growing contingent of Brookies at Ball Aerospace, one of our host companies!
  • Katie also accepted a full-time job offer at Ball, and will start there after she graduates this December!
  • Shreya had a paper published on the beneficial impacts of using a lunar flyby in a low energy transfer to Near Rectilinear Halo Orbits!
  • Michelle won the Women in Aerospace scholarship and started a chapter of Women of Aeronautics and Astronautics at her university!
  • Anna ran the enormously successful SciAccess Conference, and just accepted a full-time job as the Coordinator of Student Programs for Ohio State’s Astronomy Department!
  • Kaley gave invited lectures on space debris!
  • Rikhi and Josefina both won the AIAA Diversity Scholarship and will speak at this year’s International Astronautical Congress!
  • Hannah is working with the MIT Media Lab on a new project that spun out of the Grand Challenges at our 2019 Brookie Summit!
  • Grace was featured as a guest on the On Orbit podcast, and has started a job writing for Via Satellite!
  • Luc was selected as NASA ISB student scholar and was named a Rising Star in Aerospace by Aviation Week!
  • Sarah started a joint SWISE and SEDS chapter at her university!
  • Amy accepted a part-time job at Bryce, one of our host companies, as well as a visiting researcher job at Stanford University’s Designing Education Lab!
  • Julia graduated from her university, started her graduate studies at Johns Hopkins, and accepted a full-time job at NASA JPL!
  • Maddie graduated with honors, received the Leadership in Mechanical engineering prize from her university, and started her full-time job at Ball!

Whew! Just reading all of that is exhausting. It’s a good thing we’ve picked up the Brookie work ethic or we’d never make it through even that partial list! 🤣

OKAY, ARE YOU INTRIGUED YET?

Think you’ve got what it takes to be a Brookie? Interested in working an awesome, challenging job at one of our thirty host institutions, forming a one-on-one relationship with a hand-picked and inspiring executive mentor, and joining a family of incredible Fellows who accomplish all of those great things? You’ve got until November 12th to submit your application!

APPLY NOW!
We’ll leave you with one last thought: don’t let impostor syndrome stop you from applying! Nearly all of our Brookies have told us they almost didn’t apply because some part of their brain was convinced they wouldn’t get in. Don’t let that part of your brain win!

Trust us, our Brookies come from all sorts of back backgrounds — and we mean all sorts. Some of them might not have felt they were obvious candidates, but they took the leap and applied anyway… and the results have been spectacular. Maybe our next spectacular success story is you!

UW Physics Slam – October 19th, 7:30 p.m.

Come join us for the Physics Slam, Saturday, October 19th at 7:30 pm!

Five physicists turn into slammers for one night as they compete with each other to bring you the clearest and most entertaining explanation of a topic in physics. Each has only 10 minutes to wow you with secrets and subtleties of nature that took them their entire careers to discover. That’s it – 10 minutes. No fuss, no intellectual fog, and absolutely no unexplained jargon. Instead, you get good old-fashioned entertainment and a solid foundation in physical science, or the slammers haven’t done their jobs. The participants will be the judges to determine which slammer will go home with the top prize.

Proceeds from ticket sales will be used to fund travel support for UW undergraduates to attend conferences aimed at participation of underrepresented groups in physics, such as

– Conference for Undergraduate Women in Physics (CUWiP)
– National Society of Black Physicists (NSBP) conferences
– Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics
– Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) conferences
